. Never needed one as I can switch to live view instead. Seriously I believe they are for stopping stray light so the image is clearer,you can get back light issues fed from the viewing optic, so some cameras have a shutter built in to stop that. The further you are away from the eye viewing area the harder to define what your taking at the shoot
