Re: In the Pink

Sorry Daisy but these photos look flat, needing a levels adjustment. They are both out of focus as well. I've tried a simple levels adjustment and the difference is dramatic.

Re: In the Pink

1/400th at f3.5 depth of field aint going to be huge, but the area in focus looks sharp to me. Second one is lovely colour.

The thing is, and I've been there, you focus on a nice flower in the tree, the wind blows and it disappears from the view finder. And the downside is, you select a smaller aperture and the shutter speed drops to marginal. Then you need to up ISO, and so on.

I think Daisy did a good job here, and number 2 is especially nice

Re: In the Pink

Dave, my intention is to educate not criticize. I post edited examples so that all can see what I'm talking about. If members wish to learn, and indicate constructive criticism is appreciated, then there's no need to get defensive. We improve our knowledge & skills by listening to the opinions of others. If a persons doesn't agree with an assessment, ignore it. That's why we call them "opinions".

Re: In the Pink

Hey..no problem guys...am just learning...taking it all on board.

I would say that the criticism of no 1 is fair but the main flower in shot 2 is sharp even at further zoom...I've checked it and my eyesight is 20/20 according to my Optician. :P

Remember am not taking macro shots here.

Re: In the Pink

I agree entirely Bob, and I'm not defensive here. It was about understanding the photo, looking at the exposure detail and realising that these kind of shots can be extremely difficult, as I have found to my cost on a number of occasions

Re: In the Pink

We all seek the beautiful Bokeh of a gradually blurred background, with the main subject sharp as a tack. At F/3.5 and less this isn't easy because the area in focus is so small. Any movement can throw off the sharpest part of the main area of interest.

I was talking to a professional stock photographer at an annual tulip festival last year. He showed me some tricks in flower photography such as connecting a loose rubber band to a clip he attached to the stem of a flower, just out of frame. That steadied the flower in the wind. He also carried an atomizer to spray fine water droplets to simulate fresh morning dew on flower petals. I thought that too was a great idea.

I'm still learning macro close-up photography myself. I don't mean to upset anyone. If I've done so I apologize. I have far from 20/20 vision and I do make mistakes.

Re: In the Pink

I like the second one best Daisy

And like Bob's edit of the first. However just a quick note Bob, it's best to make sure that people have the 'edit ok' box:

showing in their posts before editing and reposting their photos. I don't think Daisy is, but I know some people really don't like their photos being edited
