Again, love the first but such a shame about the tail. Good shots of an animal that's not easy to take!

Both of the expected standard Dawn, the second is outstanding. Do find my eye keep going to the missing tail in one although expect if I was into Chocolate British Shorthair I would be too busy admiring his other points to notice.

I dont like the first one either Im afraid. Why? Because the cat looks uncomfortable....the whole composition looks strained and contrived. The out of focus front paw distracts and is in direct conflict with the sharp face directly behind and above.
The chopped tail is definitely a no-no IMO...and compared to the 2nd picture the eyes in the first looked under saturated or over exposed.
No, its not all doom and gloom - Im far from being a cat lover - but, this image appeals to me - the composition is good, its different. The cat looks relaxed yet alert - the eyes are clear and saturated/exposed correctly, the focus is on the face with the DOF tapering away subtlety. All in all a well executed 2nd shot. Well done.

) Seriously though, Ill seek another monitor and see if I am seeing different to others with my screen.

Number 2 for me to.
I like the way the cat's leg falls over the invisible edge. The depth of focus works really well and the lack of shadow works well to.
