Sunset tips please

Looking through my holiday snaps I took quite a lot of sunset pictures.
None of them will be great as I didn't have time to set them up nicely or use a tripod or anything. They were just quick snaps taking with my 50mm lens as I walked along the beach.
Before I start work on them in Photoshop, are there any PP tips? When I google for sunset tutorials they all seem to be about adding a sunset rather than enhancing the one you already have!!!

Re: Sunset tips please

I think anything involving low light can be tricky. What problems did you encounter LM?

As WW said it might help us to see what you mean

Re: Sunset tips please

Agree with the above. I've never been good with sunsets - though I did manage a few nice ones at Ring with the Camera Club. It helps a lot to have a tripod - though I find shooting it quite dark can give pleasing results - depending on other subjects in the shot - can give a nice silhouette!

Re: Sunset tips please

The main point of interest in a sunset (or sunrise) is the 'light' and what it illuminates (generally some clouds). As a rule, cloudless sunsets look pretty dull.

Because the light level is so low, most of the other objects in the scene will be very dark, and indistinguishable from each other, so as was suggested it is probably best to create some nice silhouettes from them.

Also, if you are doing a sunset over water, maybe go a little earlier to get the sun reflecting of the water, remember, you can underexpose the image if it is a little bright to give the illusion of the time being sunset.

Tripod is generally required, due to the fairly long shutter speeds, again a bit of underexposure and a higher ISO means you might get away with a hand held shot.

Here are two examples of using the light and just a simple silhouette. These were done on my £70 Nikon point and shoot I bought last year, so the image quality is a little inferior.

A great source for images is google. Just go to google, click the images link in the top left and search for sunset, more sunset pictures than you can poke a stick at

Re: Sunset tips please

I haven't had time to do anything with them yet.
I'll dig one out over the weekend and see what can be done with it.
In the meantime I have ridiculous amounts of post camping washing and sorting to do!

Re: Sunset tips please

Further to Alan's good suggestions - perhaps you'll be interested in this thread - as I say, it's not something I know a lot about, sunset 'tography - but here was my more recent attempt!
