Getting to know YOu! (Bazza)

Hi Yoppers! Welcome to another edition of “Getting to know Yo”!

This months' victim - I mean volunteer – is Bazza.

Many of you know Bazza already, but let's take this opportunity to delve beneath that dry humour, stoic wit, and endearing honesty, and see what makes this man tick!

So, here's introducing Bazza.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

YOP: Hi, Bazza, I wonder if you would mind being the 'star' of our 'Getting to know yo' feature for this month. I think your contribution would make interesting reading.

BAZZA: MOI a star? that's a first, are you sure you have picked the right person as I often get mistaken for David Bailey. The question is how bored do you really want to get? because once I start rambling on your reading will finish tomorrow morning - Well you asked for it so suffer at your own peril Yopplings.

YOP: Bazza - Tell us how you got involved in photography?

BAZZA: I first got interested in photography way back when pocket money was sixpence a week (you can do the conversion to new money). I remember saving for weeks to purchase my first box brownie 127 and went to the camera shop with it all in old pennies, the cost of the camera was 21 shillings, sounds strange saying shillings now. The shop keeper had just sent a member of staff to the bank for more pennies as well. See the rambling has already started sure you want to go on it gets worse?

I kept that camera for some time and it did take good B/W photos, but time marches on so when I reached the grand old age of 21 (Yippee, I was now old enough to vote!) my parents bought me a Voitlander Vito CL 35mm camera which I sill have in pristine condition as the cost of films was way above what I could afford. I think I only took about 7/8 rolls of film with it in total.
Are you bored yet ? No?

Anyway we have to skip a good few years as marriage and all that goes with it was my main priority.

Yes I decided to be a top flight movie cameraman so purchased a Samsung 8 mm movie camera. Guess what? yes I still have it and it works perfectly just like the Viogtlander but not used it for years

Getting onto digital photography. I started wondering what all the excitement was about with this digital thing, but being cautious I decided to get a cheap P/S camera which was a 2 meg pix Kodak 4200 model which I still have although the battery cover now has to be held on with an elastic band - You notice I don't/can't get rid of anything .

Where did I get to ? please remind me as I get lost so easily and what was the original question?.

Ah yes Digital photography I remember now.

So after my first adventure into digital photography with the Kodak I took the plunge and after studying different makes decided to go for Nikon, my first "proper" camera was the Nikon D70s which I kept for a couple of years together with the kit 18-70mm lens. What a fantastic lens that was and I am still kicking myself in part exchanging it with the camera for the Nikon D200.

The problem I found with the D200 was battery life – dust, and most of all struggling to get enough light onto the sensor. So it wasn't long before I purchased my present camera the Nikon D300 of which the saga of he purchased is buried somewhere in the history of YOPS.

That hopefully answers your first question

YOP: Zzzzzzz..... pardon...Oh yeah ..What in your opinion creates a great image?

BAZZA: I am not keen on what a lot of people do is over post process photos turning them into something that is unnatural. What creates a good image for me is something that attracts ones attention immediately with a complimentary background. I am not into portraits or abstract so I leave that up to others.

YOP: Who, if anyone has inspired you - photography or just generally?

BAZZA: Nobody has really inspired me it; what does it is being able to capture that moment/place in time which can never be repeated. Looking at old photos and how life was back then is better than 100 words.

YOP: Which type of photography do you find most enjoyable, or challenging, and why?

BAZZA: I do enjoy wildlife and nature and find it one of the most challenging of all types of photography. Generally any other type can be taken again and again until the picture is perfect, something that can't be done with the above, you either are lucky and capture something rare or miss it altogether.

YOP: What's your personal fave photograph?

BAZZA: My personal favourite must be my Swan entry in a worldwide photo competition when I got joint 6th place; but I did manage to get a couple of photos in the local rag as well about cows invading a golf course.

YOP: What camera/lenses do you use most of all, and why?

BAZZA: Which camera? the D300 Nikon is an absolutely amazing camera and one I wouldn't ever part with - as for favourite lens that depends on what I want to photograph,so a tough question to answer. I will leave that to the list you see on my postings. If you asked for my wish list it would be the Nikon 200-400mm lens; a real dream lens.

YOP: What is the future of photography?

BAZZA: As for the future of photography who knows? When I was a lad digital watches, cameras, computers, going to the moon, were all unheard of, amongst many other new inventions.

Technology is advancing faster than ever but my bet is something along the lines of buttonhole cameras as good as we have now, with the need for just one lens and being able to transmit to a computer as well. With things like Google earth and being able to read a paper from telescopes in space, we will be able to look far further into space we than we can ever dream of. The Hubble telescope will become a museum piece .

YOP: Thanks very much Bazza, an interesting and amusing introduction to the fabric of you – nice getting to know Yo!
