Maximum ISO setting

Is anyone using a maximum ISO setting for general photography or are you content to let the camera do its thing.
I'm currently experimenting with 400ISO and 1/500th. shutter speed.

Re: Maximum ISO setting

like what azz said, depends on the situation. at times, i set my camera's to auto iso. I set my k20 to shoot 1600 max, and d700 to 6400, but at most times, I control it. and try to keep it as low as possible....(basically anything below 800 on both bodies)

400 is normal..

Re: Maximum ISO setting

Yeah - I often shoot at 400 - it's rare I use much lower to be honest, unless using flash. On rare occasions I bump it up as high as it will go, to deal with dimly lit pubs - the deterioration is very noticable, however, it doesn't matter for the purpose we're taking those photos.

Re: Maximum ISO setting

I am of the opinion low is best. Normal iso for me is 100. If the light is bad I will go up to 200 and sometimes 400 but not very often. In exceptional cases such as mid winter grey miserable day at a field trial where I need to catch working dogs in action I will go to 800.

I honestly don't see what is to be gained by using higher than 100 iso if there is no need to. But I was taking photos back when 200 iso (asa) was deemed a fast film and kodachrome was rated at 25 iso so perhaps it's a throw back to those days that makes me go as slow as possible.

Re: Maximum ISO setting

I always feel a bit hard done by when I have to increase the ISO.

As I shoot mainly landscapes with a tripod my preference is to lengthen the exposure if I need a touch more light.
