Trying out shutter speed today.

The kids were on a roundabout today so thought it would be a good time to try the shutter speed out for the first time.

2 pictures below, 1 with the highest speed possible, the the second with a low number (can't remember which). I had a play in Photoshop to make the second one a bit more interesting.

My son on the ground puked his guts up in the car on the way home after all that spinning!!!!

Re: Trying out shutter speed today.

Someone, who's name escapes me, once said "I believe in gradual experimentation with running shoes."

I feel in experimenting with shutter speed, or any other feature, you need to slow down...experiment gradually, take images from the same point, and of the same subject, at different settings to see the many variables that can be produced. That way you can really appreciate the subtle differences - much the same as you did experimenting with DOF.

It is much harder to compare and contrast and draw conclusions - and ultimately appreciate and master those differences naturally, so they become second nature, when the subject imagery changes in such a way as you have portrayed, and you don't make note of the settings for future reference.

Re: Trying out shutter speed today.

I like what you have done with number 2 LM reminds me of us playing on them when were kids

Agree with J about practising on like for like, as you'll notice more than just things being in 'freeze frame' or not with exposure time. Longer exposures let more light in, so great for low light situations (albeit where the subject is stationary).

Re: Trying out shutter speed today.

You are so right. I need to plan an experiment. This was just a spontaneous moment while the kids were playing (and before the puking started!)
I'll find something to play with tomorrow.

I love the second one - I think it's excellent - great composition, and fab sense of movement! Well done.

Re: Trying out shutter speed today.

Little me - good job - now try exactly the same exercise maintaining the same three shutter speeds, but this time ensuring correct exposure across all three images.

Very good LM! Now see if you can figure out what Jack has said
