Trying to enhance a photo with Photoshop

I think as well as learing to use a camera I need to get more competent with photoshop.

So I snapped a flower yesterday and I've been working on it today with Photoshop.
I'm not sure I'm getting the best out of it though.
Can anyone give me pointer or tell me which things do / don't work in my attempts so far.
Thanks.

1. Least fiddled with

2. Trying to sooth the dark background

3. Going for a hazy summer afternoon feel

4. My first go with textures

5. last one!

Some interesting effects there - hard to see them atm with the changes being made to the forum - will try to look again when it's sorted!

Number 3 for me, and 5 too - and hate to disagree with Azz but I love it as it is. Of course, that's the beauty of art - we all like different things - and I think that this is a lovely shot without getting too close to the insect.

Re: Trying to enhance a photo with Photoshop

I took a shot using the first photo to see what I would do with the editing. I enlarged it first 200% using Genuine Fractals. Next I ran it through Noiseware software to minimize any noise. I used the Autofix function of Photoshop Elements 7.0 before using Autosharpen. I then got into Enhance - Adjust Lighting - Highlights & shadows and incread the setting +25. Finally I vignetted the outside edge about 3/4" all the way around the edge before adding a solid black simple frame using Edit_Stroke(Outline) Selection and 6 pixels.

Thanks for all that!
No idea how to do any of that, in fact I'm not sure my ancient version of Photoshop has those fuctions, but I'll have a look!
