Bi-plane

Spotted this gem flying past, unfortunately by the time I found it through the lens it was past the point of best capture but I was still pleased at the detail the lens picked up, [ Tamron 70-300 ].
Must remember to put lens to minimum distance first for targets like this, pick up the target through the viewfinder, then extend the lens - as I have been finding the reach of this lens often means I`m looking beyond the object so like this one it was moving out of range by the time I found it
[ Oooh just realised that`s the first tip I`ve been able to give as a beginner to other beginners ]

Proper tips, [ unlike mine above ] much appreciated, there are often helicopters, smallish planes, occasional microlites and sometimes hot air balloons in the local airspace so I would love to know how to maximise shooting potential for things like them

Re: Bi-plane

It's not a subject I can profess any knowledge about other than going to a few airshows and things and just applying general principles abiout photography, exposure and avoiding camera shake. However if you look at some of the websites for aviation enthusiasts, and places like Flickr you will see loads of shots of planes etc.

From an artistic point of view these sort of shots of the 'plane just in sky' are never really that interesting, more just a record of the moment. Being above the planes e.g. walking in the lakes or have some skyscape or whatever that tends to give it a little more interest. It's a good chance to try out the lens though.

Re: Bi-plane

As you say BC it is a shot of a plane in the sky adequately taken, I suppose it depends if planes are your thing of not. On the other hand I think Patch made a good job of it not easy particularly if your camera does not have a lens on it when the subject arrives and then you forget to pull it to the wide end so you can find what you are looking at.

Joking apart as a first, a good attempt, the whole plane is not sharp but I think what you have achieved commendable. It does look better when viewed at full size.
