Do press togs NEED expensive/huge cameras?

Some of you may or may not of seen my ''pic in the paper''

well in the actual paper the size was 8 x 6.

The photo was taken on Lukes little £100 nikon camera and the quality in the paper equals all the other pics.

Which casts my question 'do press togs NEED huge cameras?

Re: Do press togs NEED expensive/huge cameras?

Think it is the huge lens the press boys and girls need because they like to get closeups of things they are not supposed to see.

Re: Do press togs NEED expensive/huge cameras?

I would of thought yes, well, to get the sneaky shots they get definitely, for walking about town stuff maybe not. But, if you were a press photographer, took the most awesome shot, something world news worthy, it would probably end up being printed all over the world, in huge prints etc, exhibitions, so you'd want a decent quality digital file.

I think press togs need top quality gear, as it does take a battering, lots of lugging about, you'd need gear you can trust.

Having said all that, one of my fave togs Nick Danziger, has travelled the world carrying nothing more than an Olympus E410 in places like Afghanistan , so maybe it is the photographer and not just the gear

Re: Do press togs NEED expensive/huge cameras?

It's worth remembering some of the best press togs of old used Leica Rangefinders - not big cameras at all - if you need to be like a photography sniper, then a DSLR or similar is a must with a massive long lens! but a lot of press togs use smaller cameras too. Certainly round these parts they still use little digicams for much.

Re: Do press togs NEED expensive/huge cameras?

Most journalistic photographers are usually engaged in taking more than 'passer-by' snap shots of events. Of course there will always be a market for those type of images - and they will be in newspapers, particularly first print as they don't have to be great quality for print, but capture events as they unfold - consider for example the 9/11 bombings and terrorist attacks - the most memorable images are those submitted to press by amateur snappers.

The real role of journalist photographers is a living historians; they capture and archive events for prosperity, and for record. For that they need a whole range of equipment to cover incidents from 'news hound' snap shots through to very high quality prints; which as Moonie has already said, are used in different mediums and in different situations.

I take photos for a newspaper and some magazines; they are very clear what they require from me and to what standard they require them.
