Re: some scans of shots taken with the Rollei

Are we talking Rolleiflex two and quarter square (6x6) or a 35mm Rollei?

I have used all those films or variations of them. I used to love FP4 and HP5 both in 35mm and 6x6. Sadly we are only looking at scans of the prints, so we are limited in quality by so many factors, your photography, the processing, certainly the printing quality, and the scanning. First glance makes me feel you can get so much more from it. I'd guess these are machine prints from a local shop? I used to spend hours dodging and burning with my hands and little tools and it had to be done in real time not over a three hours and coffees in Photoshop.

The Rollei should have a good lens capable of very sharp results and film will have a lovely tonal range. FP4 is very well respected and a very good technical film too. Personally though, I don't think there is much that can't be replicated or bettered by digital and photoshop. Biggest bonus for me was just the basic understanding of photography, f stops, focal lengths, circles of confusion, inverse square law etc. that film and mechanical cameras required when i started. pretty much like my first PC ran on DOS. Now clicking a mouse or pressing a shutter button and a mini computer doing all the work means many people don't understand what's going on behind.

I reckon you'll have a bit of fun with the Rollei, will enjoy the fusty smell of leather but you'll be tired of it and the expense of it in a couple of weeks!

Re: some scans of shots taken with the Rollei

these are fab, love the actual genuine vintage appeal. Which isn't done using digital means.

I look forward to seeing some more of these.

Re: some scans of shots taken with the Rollei

Thats what I like about them to Dan! I know that they aren’t technically perfect but they bring something else to the table in my opinion. No matter how many different black and white conversions you try they just don’t look the same! I just love it! And yes BC it is costly! But I’m not using film exclusively! Lol I couldn’t afford it!!! As for self processing I don’t think Mrs Finney would be to happy! I remember my Dad taking over the bathroom for the whole day!!! I have just found a couple of enlargers at Mums! So I’m tempted!! Lol but Mrs Finney isn’t as enthused!

Re: some scans of shots taken with the Rollei

Love them, love them, love them, Mr Finney so jealous of your Rollei!!!
There is just something about film, that digital just doesn't have it's timeless, and I really love the first two especially. Your eldest boy has such a cheeky face

Keep taking them, as I love seeing them xxx

Re: some scans of shots taken with the Rollei

No need for anyone to be jealous, film equipment is being sold off anywhere and a fraction of the cost to buy than digital. You could have a Nikon F3 or 4 and a range of lenses for under £500. I've seen darkroom equipment going as a job lot for £50. Film was great fun at the time but digital is so much easier with a few exceptions.

Film does have a feel that digital generally doesn't as it comes but most of it could be replicated by the right processing.

I think the pictures here do have a a film feel. They have an instamatic moment about them, the kids, a bit soft, technical nightmares, but they just feel nice like old slippers. God, you lot will be getting LP's and 45's next, burning the CD collection...anyone for betamax?

Vinyl never died, it just went underground. Many bands offer free mp3 downloads for vinyl purchases.
