Any advice for sports day action shots?

It the kids sports day tomorrow.
Any top tips on taking action shots?
Is a DSLR OK for his or would I be better off sticking with my usual cheapy point and click type camera?
Thanks!

before you go anywhere near the school I think you should check what your school rules and policies are on photography - I think you may have a surprise.

Yes, was about to say you have to be careful - though if your own kids are competing you may not have so much trouble. Mopsa on here (you may have to pm her as she doesn't come on much) has shot school sports days in the past - but IIRC she worked at the school. IT can't hurt to ask though.

My SON IS CAMPING AT SCHOOL TONIGHT IN ONE OF THE FIVE TIPPEE TENTS THEY HAVE BOUGHT AND I HAVE ALREADY TOOK THE SHOTS.

Re: Any advice for sports day action shots?

Would use the DSLR if you are happy with the controls if not use the camera you are used to.

Photographs taken on private land, it is always best to ask first because if you are photographing a private space and it is best to have permission. Mind you schools are public buildings however it is a private event.

Re: Any advice for sports day action shots?

Thanks for the thought, bu we always photograph sports day at this school. As parents we sign a form regarding photos when we join the school.

As for the camera. It has a sports mode so would I just stick it into that then go fot it?

Re: Any advice for sports day action shots?

Chickened out of taking hubby's DSLR to sports day! Too many children and it was a bit drizzly!
So I stuck with my super rubbish cheapy camera!
I didn't get any pictures worthy of a photography forum, but I'm going to self indulgently post some anyway!

Captures my barking mad child!!!

Love the determination on their faces!!!!

and yes that is a worm on his nose!
