First Agility shots with Tamron lens

My first agility shots with the Tamron lens, many thanks Blackcloud for your tips on my previous thread about the lens

I have been taking some shots with a borrowed camera one of the agility members has been bringing with him to his weekly session while I have not been able to use my own and while I did`nt do well with the settings menus on it [ an Olympus E410 ? ], I did use the time to practice panning and timing instead of picking a spot and hoping the dogs would appear in the right place at the right moment so hopefully that practise will reflect in the shots below taken with the D40 + Tamron lens - BC, I was trying to utilise your advice there and on ISO and shutter speed, hope it shows, as usual some are better than others but pleased with early progress thanks to your help

Quite pleased with the DOF overall but that might just be my rose tinted glasses of enthusiasm playing tricks on me if they are nowhere near as ok looking to others as I hope they might be

Comments/critiques to help me improve are welcome as always

Shut up and get on with it Patch, you really do waffle on

Re: First Agility shots with Tamron lens

Hey, spot on...ok, need a little tweaking here and there with technique but blimey, they look two steps ahead of some of the stuff on the 18-55 a few weeks ago. The latter is a good lens, you were just unlucky. Look on it as a positive experience, you have learnt and gained something out of the misfortune. I won't C&C in detail, you already know, some blown highlights, one or two a little soft, but we all get that anyway (just don't publish them! ) Importantly you already can C&C yourself which is a big step forward. The lens is very capable with good colour and can be sharp, these pictures prove it so you have set your own standard!

Re: First Agility shots with Tamron lens

I know one or two people sometimes get a little miffed because I am a little critical in C&C and give my honest opinion. If there are issues I'll say so, but my intent is always to be helpful and hope people see some of the points themselves. I also give praise where it's due and that's all I have done. It's worth the praise Patch, you've got some nice shots! Enjoy the lens and camera. x

Re: First Agility shots with Tamron lens

Nice shots Patch

Great to see you back in action.

As BC said in the other thread - Using a longer lens will mean you will need to shoot faster shutter speeds. This in turn will mean you will want a larger aperture to let more light in but you will no doubt realise that sometimes your aperture doesn't go big enough so you will have to slow the speed down which brings back the problem of blurr on a longer lens.

A headache we all get apart from those lucky people who have fast long lenses.

You will find the agility type pics easier with this lens on a bright day.

Re: First Agility shots with Tamron lens

I am so very proud of you Patch. I still remember the out of focus underexposed shots you posted in your first aglity series some months ago. You've certainly come far in your knowledge & technique. Bravo! These shots are wonderful.

Oh Patch - what a fantastic improvement - you really are making such headway - plenty of great advice has been given, so I'll not clutter the page up with re-hashing what's been said - just want to say that 5,6 and 7 are cracking!
