Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

Aleksander Aasgaarden doing Switch 50-50 on this double down ledge in Porsgrunn, Norway.

I had been looking at this spot for a long time, so I was stoked when we finally had snow enough to ride it!

Nikon D700 with 50 f/1.4.

Elinchrom Ranger far right on pretty low power, SB-800 to the left, and Vivitar 285 almost right behind Aleks low down.

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

You guys sure do some exciting stuff, and your lighting is always interesting, but when I compare this to some of the earlier shots with the extreme wide angle and jet flying overhead it doesn't seem as interesting and unique. Very nice quality, pin sharp, but the interest is in the snowboarder and seems a little too small a proportion of the image. Only my opinion of course.

Great shot Tommy - I think it's a great spot too.

I might have tried to get a little lower tho, to give more room between the branches and the subject.

I cant see the point to this image either Tommee. Technically or aesthetically.

From what I can see - you didnt need snow anyway! LOL

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

I understand that you might like the one with the jet and fisheye better, but you can't shoot everything fisheye. Or you can of course, but then you would be sick of it after two days. It's very important to switch things up a little.

Can't see the point? I didn't get that one really. And yes, yes and yes, we need snow to do this. He fell straight on his face from higher up than he is on the ledge in this picture. Imagine that without any snow to land on.

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

Is there another photo from this set Tommy? Only I'm sure I saw one on your website, with that wall, but less... diagonally on. Erm... you could see the drawing of the guys with cameras better. I thought that was better (unless I made it up!) - I'm not sure about the branches on the face in this one, it distracts for me - though I think it is a great area for a photoshoot - very industrial looking, with a bit of symbolism in there!

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

No have just re-checked your website and it was a closer crop of the photo above. The closer crop definitely works better - seemed to help take notice off the face - but then, if I'm honest (and I usually am ) because of the setting (which is great) one doesn't really see the boarder. A good try - but not sure it's for me. Though I love the setting as I've said!

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

This is the exact same picture as the one I have on my website. No different crop. And I hear you all basically say that you would like a tighter crop, or me shooting closer up, but I don't agree at all actually. I'm kind of tired of shots where you focus on the trick only. In the future I'm gonna try to show more of the surroundings than I've done in most of my work so far. This might not be one of my better shots though But I'm gonna get better!

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

Oh - well the one on your sebsite looks slightly different :/ Dunno why!

I don't mind having that wide view - but there are times when it will swamp the action - and I think when it's a busy picture - like the one above, that will be the case. The one with the pipe was pretty bare actually - it was the pipe, the words and the action - and that was very exciting, and worked well!

Re: Aleksander - Switch Fs 50-50

I agree that the board'r does seem lost in the background and the tree at the left is a big distraction for me. It has the feel that you didn't have a long enough lens to get in close enough.

Think the shot would work better a little tighter and waiting till he was on line with the mural on the wall of photographers would have give it a little something extra.
