It's called a "thingy" Suzi. Americans use that term whenever they're not sure what something is. Love the composition, depth of field & sharp detail of your thingy.

Looks like the swine flu virus to me!
Nice colours, impressive flower, just looks a little tight in the frame to me, the second flower out on a straight stalk a little cut off.

Like the subject and you have done a proper job, with the others on the tight crop but you will have your reasons.
