I am learning and would be grateful for any opinions as to whether this works or does not make any impression

Many thanks

Re: Office Life

I'd like to see it bigger Julian

I think it works ok - but nothing really stands out in it?

Re: Office Life

I always speak my mine as others have found out Julian so please don't take offence its just the way I am.

I can't really see the reason behind taking the photo, now if it was a picture of the tower crane or a particular office block that would be different. The windows distort the crane too much for my liking and that ruins the picture.

However what I like and dislike often clashes with other members ideas and no doubt others will think it very artistic.

Re: Office Life

Hi Julian, on a positive note then the first thing is you are out with a camera and looking for opportunity. We see opportunities around us but they don't always fit in that little picture frame that is the photograph. Some people struggle with that including some of us in this forum. It has to fit in that little frame, not as the eyes see it. Can you fill that frame with a layout that captures the interest of the viewer because it is unusual enough, is perfectly composed, has the right lighting, has the right amount of colour and tone, was taken at exactly the moment it needed to be...many pictures don't tick all the boxes. Then we give it a title.

I think the first thing that struck me was it isn't office life at all. I'm crap at titles so tend to just say 'reflection' or something but I expected candids iin an office or something when I opened your thread. Then you have to be self critical based on some of my points above - that are of course only my opinion! I think your picture is 'ok', I don't mind the staggered crane, but doesn't really capture interest. Maybe if it was a coloured crane against a mono office, or no crame and just one solitary face looking out of a window? You could also do with your picture a bit bigger as it is a matchbox size on many of our monitors.

These are only my crappy opinions but start with being critical of your own work at the moment of capture and processing. The SX10 by the way is a very useful tool and capable of good results if used carefully and it's limitations are considered. I hope that helps with some encouragement and direction - don't take it as negative.

Re: Office Life

Many thanks for your replies. I appreciate all your views. Thanks for the positive comments and thanks for the honest critical opinion. I certainly don't take any offence for negative opinion (given so gently!). Each suggestion is super valuable for learning.

I am just an accountant in my fifties armed with a point and shoot who has started enjoying taking pictures that catch my eye. It is great to have this forum to get feedback.

Firstly, apologies for the small size, but I understood that certain forums frowned on larger inserts because of loading time delays or something.

Just to summarize my thoughts when I took this picture and after I saw it out of the camera.

'Office Life' was the dull inside of an office (maybe an accountants' office continuing to trudge on with life right next to a busy, noisy, building site.

I liked the broken and distorted image of the crane - think because this emphasised that it was a reflection. I liked the bright yellow color as a contrast to cold dark neon light interior of the office.

Something that worried me about the picture when I posted, and was pointed out by Azz and alluded to by others, is that nothing really stood out in the picture and really grabbed one's attention. My wife and daughters who are all art graduates are pretty negative about this shot(and far less gentle than the forum in criticism!)

Thanks again for your critique you have been most helpful.

Regards

Julian
