Patch's Challenge #2

Ok - I think the first challenge was a resounding success. We had great participation from all levels of experience.I think it fascinating how many different paths were taken in the resulting edits. I'm sure there something to like about each effort.

Moving forward I'm changing categories as promised. This week's challenge involves landscapes. I know this is not familiar territory for some of you yet I encourage you to submit an edited version using your idea of what works. Remember your composition, lighting and way to accentuate your key area of interest. Good luck & have fun.

Re: Patch's Challenge #2

This was interesting to work on, I don`t usually take landscape photo`s, [ especially while without a lens... ], so I enjoyed having a go at this one

First I cropped, specifically to remove the brickwork at the bottom so that the human-made `interference` of the scene was removed.

I slightly adjusted the exposure to lighten it, did an auto tweak to levels, then upped the saturation a touch to bring out the blue tint to the water spread at the bottom and the hue`s of the rocks to the left and to bring up the lovely yellows of the foliage for contrast.

For the background I thought border of some sort would be nice but did`nt want it to be overpowering, so I put a white border on first to look like the image had been printed out, then a light grey background and corner pieces for a neutral `mounted photo` effect, finished with shadows to hopefully add to the illusion of being a mounted photo print.

I know others will do way better than my effort but I enjoyed giving it a go and I`m quite pleased with it for my level of expertise, [ iow the lack of ], and within the realm of my software`s capabilities, but I`m looking forward to seeing others` versions so I can learn from them

Re: Patch's Challenge #2

Took a copy of this and then got totally sidetracked for the last 2 days and today is not going to be much better as I'm out to lunch Promise I will try to get back to it over the week end and see what my strange mind comes up with.

Like what you have done Patch and can't wait to see what others make of it. The last one was surprising there must have been at least a dozen different ideas as to how that shot should look.

Re: Patch's Challenge #2

I think this topic is difficult for a few. Way to go in responding with some breathtaking renditions. I like Manguish's version so far. Hope you all are having fun with this. I had fun controlling contast without losing detail in the water. I like the blurred depiction of motion by the water here. I wanted the look of a finished product you could frame and hang on the wall.

Re: Patch's Challenge #2

Imported into CS4 at 16 bit ProPhoto RGB and cropped a bit from the bottom of the image.

Played with saturation and vibrance controls and then selected with the "Magic Wand" the water fall and applied some Gaussian blurr.

The I added a bit of lens Flare where the fall enters the pool.

Deselected and then used the Glow filter to give the whole image a glowing effect. This was followed by adding the border.

Steve

PS. Forgot to say I done some cloning because the bright bit of brickwork where the straight wall meets the curved bit was bugging me
