Getting to know YOu! (Daisy Chains)

Getting to Know Yo - May

Hi again....

Thank you all for the feedback from the last 'Getting to Know Yo' interview featuring Polo - it was great to get to know her a bit better!

This month I thought about a face familiar to most Yoppers... after all we have seen it grace the boards of this forum a few times - always looking pretty too.

I know I've enjoyed her contribution so far and her fun approach to photography...

I hope you enjoy getting to know Samantha - Daisy Chains Photography better!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
YOP: Hi Sam (DC) - Tell us how you got involved in photography?

DC: It all got started about 5 years ago. John had owned a Canon SLR which he was fond of, but didn’t like the fact it was film – he wanted digital. We both looked into some reviews and bought a little P&S (another Canon) Even though it was a great little cam, the shutter lag was awful – but sometimes with funny results of wonky smiles and half closed eyes. After some time of getting fed up of missing certain shots of our little one, Luke, John decided he was going to treat himself to a DSLR for his birthday. On July 27th 2004, true to his word (and after scouring millions of mags and reviews – as he ALWAYS has to do) John came home with a Nikon D50 and a Tamron Lens. Now then, me being a girl for gadgets was thinking “OOOOOOOOOOOOOHH”! and virtually hijacked it there and then!

Having the camera felt very natural to me and was a great outlet for my creativity and really enjoyed learning about how it worked and where I can apply the things I had learned. However it was still a very intermittent hobby which took a huge lapse in 2006 when I became immobile during and after my pregnancy with Jack, after which time I also handed in my notice as assistant manager at work to become a full time mum. Soon the camera was back out to take lots of pictures of our new “bundle” and also help break the monotony of 24hr home life and things began to grow from there.

YOP: What in your opinion creates a great image?

DC: Thought, creativity and technique. I like a photograph that gets you hooked in straight away, whether it’s by its lighting or just its thought evoking aspect. I want to look at a shot and be blown away by seeing what the photographer saw not only through the lens, but also his minds eye.

YOP: Who, if anyone has inspired you - photography or just generally?

DC: My biggest inspiration has to be my children, Luke and Jack. They have such zest for life and are so carefree. I try to capture that in all my images. Reflecting personalities is an important thing for me in my photography.

There are also professional photographers which constantly catch my eyes. The lighting techniques at which they apply to their photographs is stunning and really is our skilled craft at its best (imo) For example; Joey Lawrence always springs to mind. Although very young, he truly is a master at what he does. His work has so many styles, but always with his signature editing. This is something I want to aim for – a signature style that others can recognise.

YOP: Which type of photography do you find most enjoyable, and why?

DC: Children’s photography. Why? Well they are some of the best people to work with, natural, relaxed and no one session is the same. The final images are also what makes everything so worth while – making a parent cry? It feels great! LOL.

YOP: Which type of photography do you find most challenging, and why?

DC: Again, child photography. It throws up so many challenges for me. Getting baby to look at the camera, or mum and dad to relax can be hard work at times. Every child is an individual so you have to find what works best for that person in that time. There are frequent moments whereby I have to fall back on one of my puppets and make a bit of a fool out of myself. Thankfully im working with some very like minded people which don’t seem to mind!!

YOP: What's your personal fave photograph?

DC: OUCH!! Not an easy one to answer! Oo erm I *think* this one..

I like it because I don’t tend to work in B&W. In fact I hate doing it! But in this instance, I was deliberately working out of my comfort zone trying to capture a different side of my work. I was out of my studio and had little control over lighting.

YOP: What camera/lenses do you use most of all?

DC: I always use the same combo – Nikon D700 and my Sigma 24-70mm. The combination is perfect for my area of work and I feel it adds continuity to my shots.

YOP: What do you like best about YOP, and what one thing would you change, if anything?

DC: Yo! has been a great source of encouragement for me over the past year or so. I have been able to help others and myself by answering questions and applying critique where I can. I enjoy seeing regular “faces” on the boards and seeing how they have gained confidence and have clearly progressed through their photography from the help of others.

I wouldn’t change YoP. Azz has created a great social, welcoming and useful place to visit for us all, where we can share a range of work that we wouldn’t see elsewhere. I’m sure as the forum grows, so will its knowledge base and it will become just as pivotal for others as its sister sites, thanks to those who make the place what it is.

YOP: Thanks very much Sam - Good luck with Daisy Chains and thanks for your fantastic contribution to YOP; long may it continue.
