Foostie auld Rook!

Comments please on this photo, I know its only of a rook but the best shot of a dreary afternoon ! Are other elements improving? and I know his tail is missing!! Trialling out the wireless remote shutter, so happier with the closeness.
Thanks

Re: Foostie auld Rook!

I love the way you've managed to retain the detail in his feathers...not always easy when photographing black subjects There's a slight blue cast going on though....maybe you need to check your white balance settings?!

You've caught his character really well though..he looks like he's sneaking off with that nut!

Re: Foostie auld Rook!

Nice one H

I'd have liked to have seen more breathing room at the top, and the tail not cut off

Also, perhaps position the camera so your background is nicer than the fence ?

Re: Foostie auld Rook!

Agreeing with Azz on breathing room - I don't actually think there's a blue cast - certainly if he's anything like the rooks around here, he's more blue than black anyway! It could do with being just a touch warmer though. Equally, he's a tad soft. A very good try though, and I'm sure practice will see great improvement!

Re: Foostie auld Rook!

Agree with the points above and I can see the blue cast. Grass has shifted to a bluer tone. Maybe because if it was a rainy day the colour temperature of the light will be higher up the kelvin scale, i.e more blue rather than the yellow/warmer tones of a sunny day. Camera may have been on auto white balance or you can dial in some compensation by selecting 'cloudy'. Have to see what works best, easily corrected in PP of course.

Re: Foostie auld Rook!

Think that is a good effort, feather detail is there although there is room for it to be a bit sharper, I'm not sure if there is a cast or not, the bird looks right the grass a bit wrong, mind you I have found that some times the grass looks a very rich colour and think it is when the growth has not been sun bleached.

No point in saying you were a bit too close as you have realised that for yourself, good work keep going and you will soon take a shot you will be really pleased with.
