Dirt! (Long post...)

I'm a landscape gardener. Apparently. So, a nice clean job playing with pretty flowers, right?

No, not exactly, because my job encompasses the entire city landsape, and not just the gardens. Take, for example, bins...
Nice simple concept. Metal container. You throw your rubbish in, it disappears...

This is a paladin bin. 1 of 12 in a 19 storey block of flats. It is big, as you may tell from the one inside the double doors behind it. It is also lying down, ready for its 3 monthly clean...which is where I come in...

Armed with a garden hoe, I have to lean in and scrape the crud...
This bin has 6" of grease, fats, sanitary products, insanitary products, maggots...and it is one of the cleaner ones...I had one 3 months ago which had a split plastic 50 litre container of pigs blood...seven months out of date...

This is what the crud looks like...with my hoe.

And closer...

And from my point of view when I'm cleaning them...

At this point i should remind you we've had a few hot days of late...so the smell had reached a delicacy and piquance usually only sampled in high summer. An dit was subtly blended with the eau de vomit that some charmer had deposited on the *outside* after a night's drinking...you could have used a dead cat as an air freshener...

Anyway...after scraping, I transfer the contents to a plastic dustbin, and spray the whole of the paladin bin with degreaser, which I then work in with a brush.

After that comes the pressure washing. 5 minutes of 3,000psi water, turning what you see above into this

The black is corrosion, the silver is metal. Other than that...all clean.

A light spraying of Jeyes fluid, and off it goes back into the bin room, to be replaced by any one of 12 more. And then to the next block.
On a good week I aim to do 75.

Anyone care to swap for a week??

Crikey, and I thought my job was bad enough sometimes when we have to investigate sewage pollutions!

Don't envy you that one at all!

Blimey! That's foul... you should make a poster of this and stick it up everywhere, maybe one or two people would be a bit more thoughtful!
