Distant Deer

I took this shot this morning but can't seem to do much with focusing on the deer. They seem to be very light. Details ISO 100, F5.6, 1/160. Can anyone improve it and if so how, thanks

Re: Distant Deer

As far as I can see you have two main problems, the coat of the deer is designed to be camouflaged and you are too far away for the lens you are using.

Not saying you should not have taken this shot, I would have done and it would be possible to improve the situation but for a good shot of wild animals or birds you need to plan and be in the right place at the right time although there is always the chance of a good shot out of the blue so always have a go.

If this is the sort of photography that appeals to you why not try a few visits to a zoo to start with, that way you will have more opportunities to learn what settings you need and when to do what.

Re: Distant Deer

If you want help editing this photo you need to post a much larger resolution photo. 800 x 600 isn't large enough to work with. Post the original.

Re: Distant Deer

The exposure issue is down to the fact you have exposed for the overall image and not the deer. I suspect your not using spot metering?....

The deers coats dont absorb the light like the surrounding foliage and is reflecting the sun creating the overblown areas your seeing in the shot.

If the camera wont focus on the subject (most likely a distance issue) automatically, you will have to do it yourself manually.

To sum up, this is an operator issue, not a tool one and wont be well fixed using any tpe of software

Re: Distant Deer

When something is 'blown' (over exposed) it's difficult to get that info back - because all that is recorded is the burning 'white'.

Would try what DC said ^^

Re: Distant Deer

Thanks, I know now where I have gone wrong, wondered what that metering was for!
This is probably the better of the shots that I took and the result after a considerable amount of time spent on elements 7

Re: Distant Deer

The edit's not bad at all for a first go. There's some very valuable advice in the thread though I hope you do get a chance to go back, get a bit closer and nail that perfect shot!
