Moon shot

I like some of the detail on this moon shot I took last night! Not bad given the camera was handheld, it is obviously cropped and sharpened, may be too much. Please feel free to criticise and edit! I can't find the c&c and edit icon

Re: Moon shot

Not being familiar with this type of shot I doubt I can be of much help, I am thinking you used the Tamron and probably took the shot with the lens at its longest extent, try dropping it back to about 290 or 280mm.

Try using a lower ISO and a longer shutter speed, if you lower the ISO the camera will automatically decrease the shutter speed you will need a tripod or a table to support the camera that must be still during long exposure (slow shutter speed)

Your shot is showing detail on one side but seems blown on the other there is also a lot of fringing, this may be the characteristic of the lens, the PP treatment or some reason I have not thought of, may be just the reduction of the number of PPI to something like 72.

Have you enlarged in any way or changed the PPI?

Re: Moon shot

A nice capture, especially given that it is handheld. The right hand side of the moon has been blown out so next time try to let less light into the camera.

I notice that you used ISO 800, this shouldn't be necessary as the moon isn't moving fast I would drop your ISO down to 100 or 200 and then increase the shutter speed. A lot of people like to take moon shots with long exposures, however you do need to be careful that you don't over expose the image, as the longer your shutter speed, the more light you are allowing onto the sensor. If you look at having a slower shutter speed you may need to think about investing in a tripod.

The normal rule for handheld shots is 1/focal length. You have actually exceeded this with your shot (focal length of 248 with a shutter speed of 1/200) so it shows you have a fairly steady hand, but if you slowed it down much more you would find it hard to prevent blur from becoming evident in your shots.

To add the C&C and Edit icons you need to go into your control panel (near the top of the page in the centre, just after your user name). Under the Settings&Options heading on the left hand side is the link to Edit Options. Click on this and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. YOu can then select yes for both features (if that is what you want).

Re: Moon shot

I just wanted to show you this link, as DJ has included some EXIF information with the shots (he is extremely good at astrophotography). Have a go at changing the settings and see how it affects your shots

Re: Moon shot

Thank you all! I will give it another go tonight and have taken all onboard. The shot was enlarged but the PPI is not on the properties, the original was 72! Think I understand the ISO and 800 is high, probably had not changed it at that point after the moving shots of the birds! dope!!
Still all a learning curve and a long road to travel........

Re: Moon shot

My poor effort at taking a picture of the moon. What I was thinking is that huge crater must have been hit by something pretty big. Not only that, as the spread of the impact is even, it must have been hit square on. My guess is that by the trajectory it was hit at, the object must have passed close to the earth in astronomical terms

Re: Moon shot

Keep working at it - I agree with what was said above about using slower shutter speeds, and lowering the ISO. I've not done moon shots in a while. I must next time I get a chance.
