Straight and level

The eye flatters to deceive...this looks perfectly level...or it has done for the seven years I've lived here and walked the dog...

And a more contrived picture...

I'm not happy with either. Somebody tell me why?

Re: Straight and level

The composition is fine on both for me, think the both lack a focal point for the eye to settle on. For example the first would work a little better with a figure towards the end of the "tunnel".

#2 feels a little tight in the crop and again think needs something for the eye to settle on, someone on the bench or someone crossing the frame behind the benches.

Just my opinion, feel free to ignore me

Re: Straight and level

I agree that the second is a bit 'tight' but you've found a nice subject.

As for the first - I actually like the fact that there's nothing for the eye to settle on (eye of the beholder and all that). It has a sort of '28 days later' empty feel to it which creates a slightly uncomfortable feel.

What also struck me was the fact that there was no litter and how clean it all was. I'd like to see a B&W version too.

Re: Straight and level

I agree with Phil - the uncomfortable feel adds to the photo - and for me is a good example of how to break the rules of composition. Nothing for the eye to settle on makes for uncomfortable viewing. The same can be said of the second too - there are two items in the photo - so the eye isn't drawn around the photo - just back and forth between the two benches - this makes for uncomfortable viewing too. 3 benches may have given a more pleasing shot, but I'm not sure that would be as good. Equally, it would be very awkward squeezing another bench between those too!
