Some sea pics

Also, don't know what's wrong with my lens, but every photo has black specs on it. If you look at the sky on most of these pics, you will see the black specs! We have tried cleaning the sensor and lens, but it still comes up the same, but only with the one lens, the other shows no black marks! On the second picture, the thing in the distance, that looks a bit like a kite or something is actually an abnomally from the lens. We think it could be mould.

Re: Some sea pics

Have you checked your sensor for dust, it may well be that and requires a clean.

Re: Some sea pics

Have you tried photographing a white sheet of paper with a small aperture of around f22? Try with both lenses. If it is visible on both then it is likely the sensor, if not then maybe just one lens. A blower brush may clear the sensor unless bits have adhered that were damp, and it may require a professional clean. If you have mould in the 18-55, it is likely a bin job. You could get a mint secondhand one for around 40 quid or the better 18 to 70 for approx. 100

Re: Some sea pics

Apart from the dust spots I do like the b/w pictures, have to say the coloured ones for me at least seem overdone in post processing. Ok some may like it,but for me I do prefer things to look more natural, at least landscape and nature pictures.

Regarding the dust spots I would suggest, after having the camera cleaned, either don't change/remove a lens so often, if you must be very careful where you do it. My preferred place to change a lens at home is in the kitchen where there are no carpets which are notorious dust traps. Take a look at a TV screen, only after a couple of days the screen is covered in dust, just an example of a carpeted room can do. If one MUST change a lens outdoors, don't do it facing into the wind and make sure the camera is facing down. Avoid dusty car parks at all costs, they are the death sentence for sensors. I do have sensor cleaning equipment for my own camera but it is not cheap, and hopefully the D300 Nikon will reduce the problems I had with dust on my previous D70s and D200 Nikons.

Re: Some sea pics

Could, of course be the lens but it seems to be in a different place unless the images are cropped. Would be best to shoot a sheet of white paper that also helps to see after you have cleaned it it has gone or moved, unless your camera has a special programme for checking, some do, don't know about yours.

Not sure I agree with using a blower on the sensor, some people do some don't, I don't. Try with a proper sensor cleaning kit of take it into a camera shop for a service. If it is fine with one lens but not the other then as BC has said best way is to bin it, there is no way you can recover a lens that has become damp and grown mould. Once had that happen with a Tamron lens and it put me off them to this day, sure without reason but once bitten.

Re: Some sea pics

Agreeing with the above Hope it's just dust on sensor/lens though - how did you clean them?

Re: Some sea pics

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I really do think it's just the 28-100mm lens, as the 18-55 pics don't seem to have the spots on. I've tried lens cleaners and looking through the rear of the lens, you can see a few marks, which we have now cleaned off and I just took a picture of a white piece of paper and there was still a tiny dark spot, but not as bad as it has been!
