When does a close-up become a macro?
At risk of being a total numpty 
when does a close up become a `macro` ?
As in what defines one from the other. [ aside from speciality lenses that is ] ?

A simple explanation is that "macro" is a close-up mode beyond the normal minimal distance to focus a lens.

'True' Macro is where the image is captured on the film or digital sensor at the same size (1:1) as the object itself.
More recently the term 'Macro' is banded around more lightly and tends to refer to when the image is reproduced on a standard print at life size.

People tend to use a true macro lens that is one that takes a life-size image and then enlarge from that to give intimate views of insects or flower parts. Others prefer to use extension tubes and even the lens reversed to get the same sort of effect, there are some amazing shots taken like this.
