Aleksander

Was out shooting at Vierli with Aleksander today. We built a kicker and jumped over the fence, but I'm saving those shots for later. But I think this turned out pretty rad as well! So I'm stoked.

Nikon D700 with 80-200 f/2.8.

Re: Aleksander

Great shot Tommy - I think I'd have preferred it without the mountains tho, as I reckon it would make for an interesting silhouette. (I know you can't change that and you don't like to PP! lol)

Btw, you don't need to add your url with each post, as it already shows in your signature

Also, this could easily go in the AOP sections dude!

Re: Aleksander

The Art of Photography sections (below these sections which are the 'general photo sections').

We've found that we basically have two types of photo posting going on here, those taken with the principles of good photography in mind (AOP) and those taken where we just want to 'share' with others - hence rather than put them all into one category, we've split them into two.

Do you want me to move this thread there?

Re: Aleksander

Yeah sure. Sounds good. But I don't really understand why people post pictures that isn't even meant to be "a good picture". I mean.. Who would like to see a photo which the photographer don't even think is a good photo? Just a thought..

Re: Aleksander

lol We've had this discussion a lot recently - which is why we brought this in. Basically there are a number of reasons why I think it's needed:
  • Not everyone can take photos to, let's say your high standard all the time. (So keepers may be an 80% success rate for you, while they could be an 8% success rate for others)
  • We have lots of beginners - and we need a place where the comments are a bit more forgiving
  • As we're a friendly community, people like to share what they've been up to, even if the photos are not great - think flickr

So why a separate section?
  • Just so our 'better' or best work stands out, and there's a pride of place for those photos - which in turn helps encourage all of us to try and get not just a good shot, but a great one!
  • So it's easier to know when people are happy for us to judge and critique their work
  • And it makes it easier for people viewing the site as a guest to see that we have people with all skill ranges here

Does that help explain the reasons behind it?

Re: Aleksander

Yeah, I get what you mean. It was just this part that bothered me a bit : "those taken with the principles of good photography in mind". Aren't all photos that to begin with? You don't go out to shoot whatever planning on getting a bad result? I totally get the point of having a section for amateurs and one for the more advanced. But I don't think the photographer should upload photos that they're not even satisfied with themselves. Do you get my point here? I'm sure that wasn't what you meant either by the way

Re: Aleksander

Yeah I get your point - and that's the bit that we pretty much discussed. So we established that some people think like you (that only our better work should be posted) and some people don't think like you, that it's ok to share too (ala flickr).

Hence why we now have two separate parts that hopefully will keep everyone happy

I've learnt a lot about what everyone needs and wants, and hope to make some fundamental changes to the site at some point - maybe even steer away from forums and go for more of a 'custom' site... but we'll see how things go first
