Err 99 - Canon 18-55mm
Oh no. I've read about this and its happened. With the kit lens on when my focal range is set 18mm and any fstop over 3.5 I get a Err 99 error, I've tried cleaning the connectors.
dont know what else to do.
That leaves me with a fixed 50mm as my only lens.

Its definitely the lens, as I've reproduced the error on another 350D and a 400D. sad times.

ERR 99 - is a Lens contact point error, so you are looking in the right area.
Have you tested another 17-55 on your camera? Does that work ok?
are the contacts on the lens undamaged? did you use a solvent to clean them?

tested another and all good. I haven't used any solvent but an eraser as recommended on the net.
contacts seem fine, over the last few months while searching for focus on auto, I've had a strange high pitch whine, but not the beep for focus. damn.

ahhhh.....sounds very much like a 'dead' lens then. If its any consolation last October I sent a lens back to sigma for repair - it was just out of warranty; they repaired it free of charge and returned it to me within 1 week. I got a letter from them the day after I got it back saying they had received my lens and will repair it FOC. Talk about good service.
I'd give Canon UK a ring Dan - see what they have to say.

canon wont do anything for free as I'm 90% in out of warranty. Might just pick a second hand one up off ebay.

Have a look at MBP Photographic. They have an 18-55 EF-S. I don't know enough about Canon to know if that is what you want but I defo recommend them as a secondhand seller. http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/ind...oduct_uid=1127
