Sgurr Dhomhnuill

"Where did you go today?" asked John, the ghillie in Strontian last July. "Well, I'm not quite sure how to pronounce it," I hesitated, then gathered up the requisite phlegm and made an attempt at Sgurr Dhomhnuill with the appropriate voiced fricative at the beginning and not much else afterwards (as is common in Gaelic, where "if in doubt, leave out" is not a bad rule of tongue). John looked at me in puzzlement. "The wee pointy peak up the road," I explained. "Och, we just call it Donald," he said.

Ardgour's highest despite being just shy of 3000 feet above the loch, it's a modest hill - Sgurr Dhomhnuill or Donald's Peak from the (dare I say sunny) shore of Loch Sunnart - taken from the end of our holiday home's garden. Canon 40D

Re: Sgurr Dhomhnuill

What a very clever picture; the way you have composed it to ensure that the smallest part of it is the key feature, i.e. the dark hill in the background (however it's pronounced )

Using the river and right hand shore as lead-in lines to the Sgurr. As if that wasnt enough to lead your eye to the peak, the green finger of land coming in from 2/3rds left serves as an additional cross reference point leading directly onto the key feature; as does the descending line of trees to the right - which gives balance to the green finger on the left.

I also like the off centre rock not only giving the foreground interest, but acting as a datum point for the eye to enter the picture - although other foreground features would work equally as well, the fact it is a huge slab of granite rock ties it the granite peak in the distance.

The rule of thirds is also evident through this picture as is good balance between foreground, middle ground, distance & sky.

All in all a fantastic example of how to compose a picture Phil; a great visual lesson to anyone taking landscapes and a very beautiful location too.

Great job.

Re: Sgurr Dhomhnuill

Cheers guys. Being somewhere we go quite often to stay, I've a few images taken from this spot so unlike most 'Highland' scenes I'm lucky enough to pick and choose the weather.
