Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

Been thinking of having my own website so I was wondering what other people use ? have seen these sites for £35 a year but are they any good ? its only at the thinking stage right now cos Ive been offered a fantastic photo opportunity and would like to put my images somewhere a bit proffessional than say photobucket.
Thanks
Stew

Re: Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

My son did mine for me, so it cost nothing.

Re: Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

If you're not into web design I'd try and get a professional one - I think there are quite a few photography orientated template type sites you can get?

If you need somewhere quick and easy to show off your portfolio you could use your YoP profile

Re: Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

I personally prefer to design my own as you can then customise it how you want, however it does take time which is something I don't have in abundance anymore so mine generally only gets updated every few months or so. I started creating a new layout but haven't had the time to move all the information across so it is still on the old design

Some of the professional sites are fine and I agree with Azz, if web design isn't you thing or your don't have the time to modify/customise it then there are some decent alternatives out there

Re: Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

I have used Clicpic in the past but i found it quite limiting - i now have my own design which cost in the region of £40per year to run. Its nice to have something unique to me and fits in with the "face" of my business

This is mine

Here is one i did for our other business - FoodCraft

Re: Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

I did my own, it wasn't code heavy and all done in flash. Granted not to everyone's taste but costs me 16.50 a year. low bandwidth but I can upgrade any time I hit more.

Re: Personal website - off the shelf - or custom made ?

Think I may go down the basic clicpic route to start off with and gradually upgrade as my portfolio gets bigger, thanks again guys.
