Re: A few small birds

They are all nice images SK but a little flawed IMO, exposure, composition and background clutter. Except for the last one, #7, that is a terrific capture - the light, exposure and compostion is perfect, look at the way you caught him just turning around to see what's going on. Great stuff

Re: A few small birds

I have to disagree with you, but you are entitled to your opinion. I think that the exposure is right, and nothing wrong with the composition. Birds live in trees and they tend to have branches, the only one with a cluttered background is the singing robin and the fact that it is singing makes up for that fact for me.

Hardly constructive to just say they are all flawed in pretty much every aspect of a picture and not say how you think that it could be improved.

Yes, and people live in houses but they get out once in a while.

So, because a bird opens it's beak and you capture it that makes it a good image? That image is poor IMO look at the shadow covering its eye and all the clutter in the background. Not to mention it being very noisy for ISO400 and blurred as well.

If you are patient enough you can capture birds in the open on single branches/twigs. No. 3 - the colours are flat and the light is not good. You could have zoomed out a little as well to give him more space in the frame.
#5 is flat as well and the branches to the left are distracting too. Composition could be better, rather than have the bird appear in the middle. No.5 I don't like it at all, mainly because of the bird feeder and the tail from the other bird hanging from it.

You need to think about what you are capturing, not just the pretty bird in the viewfinder but its surroundings, framing and the light as well. Also, check your image histogram for blown highlights and dial in exp comp or re-compose and shoot again.

Re: A few small birds

Good advice and I'm sure that all your pics are so well thought out with uncluttered backgrounds.

#3 the bird is not a colourful bird, that is the colour it is in real life.

#4 the interest was the interaction between the birds, it was on the feeder and with the action and movement in the shot I liked it.

#5 again the bird is the colour it is in real life, the bird is not central there is more space on the right than the left and the head, the point of interest is on the intersection of the thirds in the top right corner.

Birds move, and you can't take a pic, check the histogram and then shoot again as the bird isn't there anymore. The birds in these shots are very small and they don't hang around much.

Re: A few small birds

I think it's a good set - but not your best work Ste, some of the photos you have taken are amazing and while these are still good not up to that standard.

I think what DJ is saying is that if you wait around more (albeit maybe insanely more lol) you 'could' get that perfect shot.

If you are happy with the pics that's the main thing - everyone else's comments are just for your appraisal, and if you feel they have a point you could bear that in mind for future sessions.

I think it was good to ask for DJ to go into more depth as that helps you see where he's coming from. Personally I would take what DJ has to say on board because some of his bird pics are outstanding, check out his birds album on YoP if you get two mins.

Re: A few small birds

I did look at the bird albums azz, and if we are talking about composition then there are a few on there that suffer from the alleged problems of these.

Some have the bird slap bang in the middle, the birds are too small in the frame for my taste and there is a lot of blurred and distracting elements in the frame.

Constructive criticism is good, and helps growth. Going on a thread and saying that none of the pics work and citing examples of why they don't work, which aren't actually true isn't actually much help.
