Waxing gibbous Moon (61% full) 5d MKII capture

Tonight's Moon captured with my 5d MKII and 80mm refractor.
I mounted my telescope on my Manfrotto tripod, used MLU (mirror lockup) and my Canon TC-90N3 remote controller to take the image. I also had an IR filter (infra red blocking) screwed on to the camera telescope adaptor to get the sharpest image possible, I also used the 5d MKII live view function @ 10x mag to get precise focus on the Moon.

This image is a 100% crop, I've also kept the colour in this shot
1/80sec exp, ISO 160

Kit 1
Canon 5D MKII
Canon 400mm f5.6 L
Canon 70-200mm f4.0 L
Canon 17-40mm f4.0 L
Kit 2

Fabulous DJ! looks so much better fullsize

Do you take these shots from your garden, or do you have a special spot where you go?

Thanks MS. Just took the shot in the garden. If I'm doing any serious imaging (eg long exposures) with my motorised tracking mount and all the other bits n bobs, then I prefer to travel to slightly darker skies. Sometimes it's more bother than it's worth because of the ammount of time setting up all the equipment then having to balance this and that and align the mount to Polaris (North star) and loads of other stuff and before you know it, the clouds have moved in

Amazing shot DJ - I'd love to visit it, wouldn't you? My friend is a space fan and enjoys photos of the moon - he talks (rather excitedly) about the 'terminator'. Do you have any pictures illustrating the terminator?

Sounds very technical hun
I always show your moon shots to my son, as he is into all things "space"

You must take shot of all your kit when it is set up, so I can see exactly what you use then I get a better idea, of what bit is what

It does blow my mind that you take shots of things so far away, and yet they come out so clear and sharp.

So much clarity it is difficult to believe you can't just go and touch it. Have to agree with Suzi, the equipment and technicalities of this sort of photography go straight past me, I am agog with admiration.

Thanks JR. I have visited the Moon before when I got invited to a party there but I did not stay long as there was no atmosphere

Most of my images illustrate the terminator with the exception of the full Moon. It's where the light meets the dark and creates all those shadows on the craters and gives the Moon's surface a kind of 3d effect. Extremely high magnification images may show it better.

btw JR, happy mod'n
