Agility pics after your advice

What a shocker, me posting more agility pics

I think they are a marginally better than the last one`s, [ I hope ], mostly of the Collie I have posted pics of before, he is a swine to capture well as his face is so jet black with no markings for definition of features, and he is so darned fast, but when possible with the course layout I tried to position a bit better as per Azz`s tip for trying to get the dogs face toward the light, not that there was much sun today but it does`nt `arf make a difference, I can actually see this dogs eye`s for a change - yes I have been totally dim for never thinking about that

I used manual settings throughout and oddly seem to be getting better sharpness that way than on the Sports setting, [ which means I`m doing something wrong with the individual settings on Sport, I knew I should have left them alone ], but I`m still guessing somewhat re aperture and camera speed

Those settings are mainly where I need to tweak I guess but not sure what the optimum settings are for speeding dogs, I can `feel` I`m getting a bit nearer to what I`m after, [ with lots more help pretty please, it`s you guys who have got me this far, that`s a fact ], I`m going to be able to post a real `wow factor` photo one day, I just don`t know when it will happen

and a gratuitous new close up of my Silk `just because`

Re: Agility pics after your advice

Thanks so much Azz The doglet in 1 and 2 is called Charlie, he is such a happy little soul

Chuffed to bits at the compliment but I have only had this camera for a month so I think the only thing I would get if I asked for a DSLR from father xmas is a slap

WOW Patch! These are a great improvement, love how you have captured both the movement of the dogs but also their happiness. it really comes across especially in the Spaniel who has wonderful flying ears! I love the last shot of the collie flying through the air.

Silk looks wonderful , nice shot xxxx

Re: Agility pics after your advice

You really have the hang of this Patch the shots are well composed and I love the way you are changing your position to get the most interesting angle on the dog.

They are a good set of shots and the stationary items are nice and sharp but you still need to increase the shutter speed a bit. Take a look in your cameras hand book and see if it suggests a way of speeding it up, you may need to increase the ISO or you may be able to adjust the shutter speed and have the camera automatically adjust the aperture to compensate. Think it was said before to try using the sports program but your camera may not have one or it may not be quick enough.

You have asked for advice so I have given it, you may know it already or not be able to change the camera any more.

Re: Agility pics after your advice

Well Done Patch - these are a nice set of shots

I have been looking at the EXIF data on the first and last shot. In the first one I noticed that you have focused on the jump and whilst that is nice and crisp, the dog is slightly out of focus. You are using shutter priority mode to get the speed (1/500) however the camera is selecting the aperture and in this case it has selected f2.8 which gives you a very narrow DoF. I personally would switch to Aperture priority mode and choose a higher f number (3.5, 4?) as this would get more of the shot in focus. You do then get the problem of your shutter speed slowing and you need this fast to freeze the movement, so you could increase your ISO (it was on 100) to give you the faster shutter speeds.

In the last shot, the camera chose f3.5 and as the dog is side on, more is in focus - I do like that shot

Thank you
I`m so pleased the dogs enjoyment is showing through, I do want to capture that because if that spark is`nt there a photo is just a `flat` snap - does that make sense

Thank you again
This camera is the first I have been able to get any kind of crispness with and its a swine getting shots indoors of white dogs because the flash can just bleach them. I do love trying to take close up stills of Silk because she has a lot of intensity in her expression when she is concentrating for me, I love to capture that because she never used to be able to focus on anything for more than a few seconds, [ suspected brain damage from abuse ], so getting portrait type photos of her is very special to me because it`s a measure of how far she has come, she has put so much into trying to concentrate for me
