Re: Flowers

Here's a carnation one I took a while back PD, it might give you some ideas:

I really like the colours in that rose one, and I'd try to do the same, but angle it more towards the left and get the stem going towards the mid right ish - so pretty much the same just a little bit different

Thanks Azz. Unfortunately although only bought today the rose did have a few dying areas on the petals, so was trying to avoid them showing up to much.

Re: Flowers

OK, the first one - pick a point in the centre of the main petals and focus SHARPLY on it. The composition is fine, but the image is very soft and lacks a sharp or clearly defined point of focus.

The second one - I would be inclined to focus sharply on the yellow heads in the centre of the flower. Instead your focus is on one of the petals surrounding the flower head. this confuses the eye and detracts from the image as a whole. Nicely saturated colours though.

The third one - I like the subject, it is the only one of the three that is sharp and has a pleasing point of focus. My only three suggestions are - 1. Angle the rose head inwards facing into the picture, only slightly. 2. Either crop in much closer than you have done, or, 3. Include the whole flower head in the picture to maintain balance within the frame. As it stands, the bottom of the rose head is cut off.

All in all, I can see you have thought about your composition, and these are some of your sharpest images to date. you just need to concentrate on a few more little details now. Good work.

Re: Flowers

PD whenever there is a definite centre to a flower I always focus on that, with flowers like Carnations it is a bit harder as you have no real clear centre. Gerberas are great to practise on, as you have a very defined flower, in bright colours, and a large centre. They are my fave to photograph, and roses.

My fave is the first one, I like the composition and lighting xxx

Re: Flowers

Thanks guys, all comments are greatly appreciated. As I don't have a macro lens the one that I have only allows me to go so close and then loses it, I did want to go closer into the middle with the second one especially but my lens wouldn't really let me. I have to get me a macro lens soon!
