Weathered Railcar

I love old decaying things! They have character, texture, a history. I captured such an antique right outside a restaurant window. I knew it was a "Kodak Moment".

Re: Weathered Railcar

I really like the texture in that too Bob, only thing I would be tempted to do is straighten it a tiny bit, like so:

Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm

Re: Weathered Railcar

Super colours there Bob & what a funny wee carriage.

I love pics that have a bit of info (Google and all that)

.......March 1, 1907: What is said to be the biggest deal in Columbia River timber lands ever made was completed Monday, when the Clark and Wilson Lumber Company purchased 10,000 acres near Goble for $800,000.
William Reid and his father in law, D. C. Pelton, president of the Banker's and Lumbermen's Bank, of Portland were the former owners.

The tract contains about 400,000,000 feet of standing timber and the purchase includes the Goble, Nehalem and Pacific Railway, a logging road ten miles in length and all the logging and camp equipment now on the land.

The logging outfit [that] formerly worked on the tract has been putting about 100,000 feet of logs into the river daily. The purchasers announce that the capacity will be increased, making the daily cut about 150,000 feet. The logs will be rafted and towed to the Clark and Wilson Company's mill at Linnton, where they will be cut into lumber. The Clark and Wilson Company plans to carry on its own logging operations in the future.

Re: Weathered Railcar

More bits, Goble is a tiny town along Highway 30 going to Astoria & the location where I photographed my favorite tree, in Trojan Park. This boxcar was photographed at Camp 18, an old logging camp at the 18 mile marker of Highway 26.

Re: Weathered Railcar

I like this shot Bob but i think it may have benefited form more track in the image (from the right) - it will help lead the eye through the photo. As there are alot of texures and rustic colours, a shallower DoF may have helped seperate the car from the background.

You could have alot of fun with this location

On a side note, have you got a Graduated ND filter? These will really help to bring back any blown out skies..

First, thank you for you input KK. This rail-car is sitting on a very small chunk of track, not a real rail line. This site is readily available (only 50 miles from me) so I can re-shoot the car with a wider lens opening. I'll attempt to post process the background to see if I can simulate the shallow depth of field. I do not own a Neutral Density filter but agree that the sky is blown out. This is the first dry few hours we've had in months. There's dryer weather coming in the next few days so I may choose to return tomorrow and pack a tripod. There are dozens of lumber camp artifacts at Camp 18, enough to occupy a photographer for many hours.
