Did you work as an assistant/second shooter?

How many of you have worked as an assistant or second shooter , at a wedding, studio, just shadowing a Pro?

Once I move I want to get into Portraiture, and I want to get some experience. I would be willing to work for free just to get some help. and a foot in the door.

Have any of you done this? Thanks xx

Iv done 2 shadowing jobs. Not as much as id like. I was fit i when the student was off as a favour! Iv sent out more CVs though in hope of more work.

Its quite daunting at first, but the experience is invaluable. Depending on the photographer you will have to sign a contract. Mostly about copyright and distribution. Mine was one of being unable to distribute the work anywhere! bit sucky but i see their point.

It's a shame I'm moving, because I was going to ask you, that when you did weddings can I shadow you

Re: Did you work as an assistant/second shooter?

I've done both shadowing, 2nd shooter and twin shooting in the studio and on location.

It's a good experience to share, gain, swap ideas from a pro. I now get asked to do work for the organisation and for other client organisations, newspaper and magazine work.

Re: Did you work as an assistant/second shooter?

Sometimes you don't need to shadow, but can build your portfolio by doing freebies, or, charity work. As it's slightly off-topic I've posted a new thread here about it: How to start putting together a portfolio

Nikon 55-200mm VR
