Kit Insurance

Who do you guys insure your camera and equipment with?

Is it dedicated Camera insurance or just household inclusive?

What's covered, when, where?

And how much do you pay?

Thanks for your input.

Re: Kit Insurance

To be honest I don't insure separately, think because you add it a bit at a time and never get round to thinking what it must be worth. A bit frightening really, we have 3 video and 2 dslr for a start and then there are lens and about 5 tripods, one of the video ones worth as much as one of my cameras. Then there are the compacts and the point and shoot, think there is even a Polaroid tucked away somewhere.

Then going back to the days of film we own a cupboard full of cameras both 35mm and cine to say nothing of projectors both old and vintage.

Think perhaps I should get it all valued but it will take a good deal of effort so perhaps I will just continue using them and hope there is not a ready market for most of it.

Re: Kit Insurance

I insure mt separately as its for business use as well.

PHOTOGUARD

You can go to their website and they will give you an on line quote in seconds.

I cannot say how good they are as I have never claimed but I have had feedback from other forums that they are very good.

In vehicle cover is complicated something about having a certain type of boot, but that doesn't concern me as I would not leave camera stuff in the car anyway.

Re: Kit Insurance

I use PhotoGuard as well, you never know when you may slip and break your gear or even have it stolen. I was suprised how much equipment cash wise I had when Ii added it up at the cost price. Even a DSLR + a lens can easily come over £1,000 let alone several lenses and other gear.
One other thing insurance makes you do is keep a record of the serial numbers of everything.

Re: Kit Insurance

serial numbers great input and i always keep the boxes anything came in receipts and take a photo of each item as well.

Also have to do that for expensive household items.

Re: Kit Insurance

I can't remember who i am insured with but it is for my equipment and also public liability insurance as some venues require it. For the track days that i do, if i am track side places like brands hatch etc require you to have liability up to £5m!!

Re: Kit Insurance

Photoguard seems pretty reasonable - I haven't used them myself either (never had seperate camera insurance).

Re: Kit Insurance

I currently don't have seperate insurance but as always all would be quick to take your money but it's only if you make a claim do you actually get to see how they perform. I think insurance is pretty reasonable for amateurs, but any hint of using your equipment commercially and the rates rocket up. There are also issues like

1) having to provide all serial numbers
2) some won't cover you if your kit is left in a car
3) same as 2 but only covered if your car has a locked boot ('trunk' for Bob and Moonie!) Hatchbacks and fold down back seats to access a boot are considered risky and therefore not secure
4) new for old or commercial value.
5) accidental damage or not
6) Left unattended or not - e.g. in a seperate room when you are working etc.

I'm sure there are more issues.

Having read up on this in the past it seems quite a few people have difficulties maybe waiting months for payouts etc. and many people seem to be paying £15-£25 a month which seems excessive to me when you probably only pay that for £30,000+ house contents cover. Just some extras to think about.
