D&AD Student Photography Brief.

I've got to come up with an entry for the D&AD Student awards as part of my degree. I'm currently studying a Degree in Visual Communication which is basically Illustration /Graphics. I don't fit the mold and can't help but feel I'm on the wrong course and long to be doing photography.

I'm thinking of attempting the photography brief. It's a bloody tough one but I've had a some great initial ideas. I thought I'd share the brief with you guys to see what you think.

Quote:
The brief
Tell a story through a photo-essay of five images that changes people’s perceptions of wealth and poverty.

Considerations
- The world is marked by the widening gap between the rich and the poor. We are looking for work that changes the way that people
think about wealth and poverty and that challenges the visual stereotypes associated with these notions and the gap between the two. Think about how your images will confront and upturn the traditional concepts of what it means to be wealthy or poverty
stricken. You must communicate about it in a new way or say something original. Challenge the viewer to redefine the way they
think. Think about what it really means to you and to others and
the way that the concepts of wealth and poverty can dictate
behaviour or marginalise groups of people.
- The photo-essay is a classic photographic format and certain elements must be present to make it successful. Think about the story you are telling and the structure of your narrative. As in any good story, pace, tone and point-of-view are key. Think about how you focus the viewer’s attention throughout. The judges will be looking for work that considers and uses all these elements.
- You may title your images if you wish and/or provide a short written narrative (no more than 150 words), but the main communication must come through your imagery.

Mandatories
Your photo-essay must consist of exactly 5 images.

Re: D&AD Student Photography Brief.

Sounds good

I did Technical Illustration OND/HND/BA and although it was heavily geared toward illustration (little Graphic design) there was a fair amount of photography involved.

I very nearly went to Poole in fact I went as far as the interview. Not sure about now (this was back in 1990) but Poole/Bournmouth, Blackpool and Falmouth were considered the strongest courses. I ended up in Swansea though.

Re: D&AD Student Photography Brief.

Dan, right now stuck in a job going back and forth to work everyday I'd love to have that brief and not too much else to think about. Go for it mate. Maybe a flick through some mags or a walk around the town will prompt you with some ideas. I wouldn't want you to be distracted by my ideas but right now Christmas coming there may be more opportunities to show Christmas spend and people being extravagant and others without a bean or a home. I spent a lot of years in the UK seeing inside peoples homes, the rich, the poor, also those that were not rich but had more than everyone else around them. When I was in the UAE the gulf (pun intended ho ho!) between rich and poor was huge. Would be great to do your essay there except their society don't like cameras. Of course you can be rich in other things if not n money... Dan you are in a country of great opportunity for that essay especially in troubled economic times. If you have a bit of imagination to steer away from some of the stereotypical stuff (the beggar with the 3-legged dog in black and white) and a spare time which I know you have! (Bloody students!)

Of course, we will all love to see what you produce...
