Need a Point & Shoot Compact Camera

Hi all, having spent nearly all day on the internet looking for a compact camera to buy, I am still none the wiser! So I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction.

My camera has just given up working - I had a little Fuji Finepix F460 which I found to be fine, other than taking pictures of the dogs when they were moving! Is there such a thing as a compact camera that takes great action shots! Im off out tomorow to get a new one, so would be grateful if anyone can help me!

I dont know what half the camera jargon means, so that doesn't help! Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Do you want one that's 'like' a DSLR (with nice zoom)? If so why not try something like the Fujifilm FinePix S5800?

Or do you want an ultra compact? If so I'd look at the Sony w170 or Canon Ixus 80.

Thanks Azz, I think at the very moment you posted this I was probably in the middle of paying for my new camera! I've actually ended up with a Canon but it's the IXUS970 IS. Hope this is going to be ok, knowing nothing about cameras - I went for one that looked pretty

Canon make great compacts so I'm sure it will be a cracker Shaza - look forward to seeing some pics!

The Ixus should be great. Looking forward to the results too. We have the Ixus 75 and 80 IS.

I found that the point and shoot had controls too small for my hands so I changed to a compact and choose the Nikon P80, fantastic zoom both quality and length (27 to 486) and a good fast shoot rate for moving subjects, the downside is it is not very cheap compared with other compacts but I feel it is worth it.

Enjoy your new camera, it is good to have something you can take to places where you are unable to take your DLSR gear.
