What is the legal stance [if any] of showing another persons work on a forum such as this?

Is it ok if you give the original photographer credit?

or is it just a no no.

or should we just provide the link?

Don't know about the legal side but it would only be polite to asked the person who took the photo if it was ok and give them a cedit. If it was with their knowledge and for showing how a photo could be improved i can't see any problem. Legally I would assume it was copyright theft.

I'd like to be asked first and credit given under the work and a link back to my site/original photo.

I would think it would be wise to ask permission first, I had someone take one of my lighthouse pics off my Flickr, and use it in a website about Lighthouses in America! They did credit it to me, but it would of been nice to have been asked first!

It depends on the circumstances - generally if someone has posted something on a publicly viewable website which allows hotlinking then you'd think it is ok so long as you credit the photo. This is the nature of the internet and is what's expected/the norm.

For people who don't want their photos posted on other sites - they use sites that prevent hot-linking, as this is their way of saying please don't post my photo.

But like many people have said it's always nice to ask first or let them know. And under no circumstances should you clam the work is your own!!

Also use common sense, posting them on a forum saying 'hey look at this wonderful pic' would prob be fine, but putting them in your own personal gallery would not!
