What setting

I was wondering what would be the best setting to take a picture in artificial light on, just in my lounge with lamps on.
In daylight I can take really good ones but in the house at night not sure what setting is best.
I was trying to take some pics of my dogs the other night and they seemed a bit pants. In fairness I only used auto with flash on.
I have a NIkon D60
Her eyes have come out blue yet they are brown.

Re: What setting

KC, there are no bog standard settings for a camera, as every lighting condition requires something different.

Start by working in Shutter priority with a speed of no less then 1/60. Bump up the ISO untill you get that minimum shutter speed without underexposure...

Using a direct flash thats on the camera, is, in a word, is cr@p. They are pretty much useless to create good lighting. Its harsh and not flattering at all. You can reduce the flash output in your camera settings to help take the edge off it. Also try puttin some toilet paper over the flash as this helps to diffuse the light and make it more flattering to your subject.

Just to add that the blue in your pooches eyes is a reflection from the flash, the same as red eye in people...

Agree with KK

For moving objects or things that won't keep still - up your ISO
