I'm confused, if the mount is Nikon is will fit surely, if it is not will it not need an adapting mount rather than a step up ring, or am I not understanding at all?

As Snapper says check the mount as Sigma make the same lens to fit several makes of camera from Sigma to Canon to Nikon, just to mention a few.
You would need one with a Nikon mount.
