Nikon 17-55mm F2.8 G IF - ED DX

Do any of you have this lens? 17-55mm F2.8 G IF - ED DX.

do you find it good for landscapes and portraits, general purpose?

I want a walkabout/multi purpose lens, this seems to have excellent reviews. I like the range, I don't really need a longer zoom.

Thanks xxx

It's a highly respected DX lens Moon. However, if you don't need it's very quick autofocus or super build quality, there are decent alternatives from Sigma and Tamron - costing a fraction of the price

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 Macro and Tamron 17-50 F2.8

I think the Sigma would suit you very well as you love Macro, and that leaves you with the rest of the money to go towards perhaps perhaps a dedicated macro (105mm) or maybe a zoom (70-200) or even a 24-70

In fact I think you could prob get the 105 + the Sigma for the same cost as the Nikon 17-55

Re: Nikon 17-55mm F2.8 G IF - ED DX

Okay haven't really looked at Sigma yet.

I am definitely getting the 105 mm F2.8 macro. that is a definite along with the 50mm F1.4.

I am looking for a good quality lens that can do landscapes and general photography. So any suggestions welcomed. Not really bothered about wildlife photography, so don't need a big zoom. But I do want to do more landscapes.

I found a kit of a D300 with the 17- 55 lens today

The Tamron 17-55 is a well respected performer and also the standard Nikon 18-70 is also considered to be very good optically although a little slow.

Sigma like other manufacturers seem to have occasional quality issues and so you can either get a good one or not but they are not alone in that. Seems to get consistent quality to buy a Nikon is the best option but then you pay more. I have a Sigma 12-24 EX and it sees very well made and good quality.

Yes, Mr Finney Winney, if you can't beat them, join themxxx

No, not what I'd call cheap,£1,700 but I am thinking long term, so the body has to last several years, and the lenses I want to start to build a good collection that I will have for good.
I think I will buy the D300 by itself, so then I can get the lenses I will use. First lens is definitely the 50mm F1.4, then a good general purpose lens, and then when I can afford it the 105mm 2.8 Macro.Way down the line, then a good landscape lens.

So Azz's suggestion of the Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 Macro would be great as I'd have a lens suitable for landscape , general use, and Macro. Until I can get the 105mm. You see I have it all planned out

I generally look at pics taken with the lens in pbase or flickr Moonie - better when they have uploaded the full size too. It's not as good as having tested it yourself but you do get a good feel for the lens by seeing so many pic. If possible try to find pics taken with the camera you want to pair the lens with too

I found the old thread about the Sigma, last night, and love the images on there.
They are really crisp and bright, fab portraits, yes, I keep trolling around Pbase at the moment.
