Filters - have I found a treasure trove?

Had a rummage through some old photograph stuff and found 9 Cokin filters and a mounting frame that will fit one of my lens. There are 4 graduated plus one sunset graduated. 2 diffusers, what do you use them for please? And one that looks clear and one called Champagne which is an amber pimple filter with a clear oval in the middle, I assume that would be for female portraits.

Does anyone use this type of square filter and if so any tips on their use.

Also found two of the normal screw in type one is a Skylight which I understand but the other is called Spectrum 7 - 1A and appears like clear glass, suspect it may be one of those filters that are produced to protect the front element of the lens.

Help, advice or comments please.

1b I suspect will have a slight pinkish and warmer colour to it. Sort of warmed up the tone of colour pics and many people left the screw on types as lens protectors rather like a UV filter.

Re: Filters - have I found a treasure trove?

Somewhere in my house is a box of a dozen or so Cokin filters, some of the square glass ones and some screw on. Got them 25 years ago when I got my first SLR. Not seen daylight in years.

I used the graduated filters for varying effects and took some pleasing skyline shots using the graduation line as an horizon. I had orange, purple, blue and grey versions.

There was a Sepia tint which gave an olde worlde effect to prints.

I also had UV and skylight screw-on filters which took the blue haze out of lanscapes as far as I remember.

There were tinted lenses which softened or enhanced different areas of the spectrum and some increased contrasts in low light.

There were some effect fliters/lenses, one was a distrorting lens almost like a fish eye effect and another was a multi-faceted lens giving multiple images.

The polarizing filter was especially useful on water shots.

Having seen the price of filters these days you have indeed stumbled upon a treasure trove.

I just put them on and played about. Got some good effects at times.

Re: Filters - have I found a treasure trove?

AH! Thanks Clare, that is helpful as the boxes are marked G2, B2, E1 etc. so I think the number must refer to the suggested stop adjustment you need to make.

Now someone please explain if what I have said if correct and what exactly it means.
