Canvas printing

Hi folks - I have a few photos worthy of 'large' printing on framed Canvas to hang on wall spaces.

Has anybody any tips, advice, experiences they would like to share - or even who might provide an affordable but professional finish?

Thanks in advance.

JR

Looking at it from a business point of view

You don't say what size of picture you were thinking about, what you have to take into consideration the pixel size of your camera, 10meg pix. I believe. If you have taken the pictures in RAW then you would have used the full amount of pixels the camera has, taken in Jpeg then that number drops considerably, even down to 3 or 4 mpix.

The larger the picture the more the quality drops (pixilation), therefore I would suggest taking a picture to somewhere like Jessops and have them develop the same picture in different sizes to ascertain the maximum size still acceptable for selling.

I would also suggest that getting them put onto canvas would outweigh the cost of selling them, I doubt very much that you would make anything taking into consideration professional printing as well.

However not only that you need to find out if there is a market out there willing to purchase your photo prints, which would be time consuming , then also not only take the productions costs but also the tax on income earned, accountants fees, insurance ( you need to be protected against anything that might result in a claim against you, ie faulty goods etc). If you employ an agency to promote your pictures their costs would have to be met or alternatively advertising costs. Also legal advice about royalties and copyright wouldn't go amiss. Then there is the cost of the photograpic equipment you use (camera/lens/flashgun) has to also be built into the total cost, that would need replacing at some stage.

Maybe you can start to see if doing it legally, what you would have to charge, oh and just one other thought, you would have to take your time spent and travelling costs into the equation as well getting all this started.

Just a few things to consider, hope it is of some help

Re: Canvas printing

Thank you for your replies. The confusion, I am afraid, is possibly down to me not explaining myself more clearly.

Bazza - a detailed insight into commercial venture, thank you. However, the prints will be for MY use. I shoot everything in Raw and sometimes both Raw & Jpeg (300DPI) so resolution quailty should never be an issue.

Azz - Thanks for the link to the Canvas page on YoP - most useful and the 'Tinman's' fleabay site looks like amazing value.

The image I'd like to 'Canvas Print' is the one below I took of the Three Graces in Piccadilly.
