I’ve decided… I think

Spent the last 3 days reading up about the cameras I have been considering that was the D90, D300 and the Pentax K20D. Well there are pros and cons with all of them so it seems what ever you buy you have to make accommodation.

Anyway I have made up my mind and I am going for the K20D – hear the Nikon people groan in disbelief but I can give my reasons if asked but will not bore you unless you want to know.

So off now to find the best price I can for the new body and a 50mm 1.4 lens, getting more than a bit excited after the tedium of make up my mind.
Kit 1
Pentax K7
Pentax 60-250mm
Sigma 105mm Macro
Pentax 12-24mm
Pentax 50mm 1.4
Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma)
Kit 2
Pentax K20d
Lens as other body

Re: I’ve decided… I think

Snapper glad you made a decision! Hope to see the results soon!

I think it would be helpful to other members looking at buying a new cam, to see your reasons on choosing the K20D..

Re: I’ve decided… I think

OK, will try to be brief.

K20D - First and importantly I have owned Pentax SLR bodies since the 1970’s so all the lens I have ever bought since then will work even if some are a bit on the heavy side, I also have a flash that may well work. I am used to the way the Pentax controls work and most are in similar places. The only item that really disappoints is the continuous shooting speed but it will be fast enough for the work I wish to do although I would have preferred it to be quicker. The noise at higher ISO is also worse than the competitors but detail is better because Pentax have left the amount of noise reduction to post camera work so you can make the decision between less noise and more detail, this suits me better as I enjoy taking details of buildings and objects so to me detail is more important. Was impressed with the effort made to make the body dust and water-resistant and the much-improved (on my present camera)14.6Mpix, also the degree of choice and adjustment available to the operator. They have introduced live view, which I would only use on very few occasions, and like most cameras with this feature it cannot be angled and is therefore not as much use as it could have been.

D90 – I felt I was paying for features that I would not use and did not need, like the video function, also felt that apart from the continuous shooting speed it offered very little the K20D did not offer and had a lower Mpix than the K20 and those horrid external rubber doors.

D300 – apart from the sensor size I did not feel this camera offered enough over and beyond the K20 to warrant the extra cost particularly because I would have to purchase new lens for both the Nikon cameras. Some may have decided that the extra sensor size would be worth it but added to the additional cost of lens it was, for me, a too higher cost for that extra amount of sensor particularly as I have just got used to the way lens work with the smaller ones.
