Thoughts on D80

I'm after a full DSLR to join forces with my P&S Sony DSC T200 and Fuji forgot the model number

I'm in turmoil over what to get, reading reviews on allsorts with no real outcome or definitive decision.

I've found a D80 body plus the following :

Nikon 18-55mm AF-S DX ED Lens
Nikon 50-200mm AF-S DX ED Lens
4Gig Card + reader
Lowepro Compupro daypack

For £600.

This a good deal?

Are the lenses much cop?

I'm SO undecided. Sony A350, Canon 450D, 40D, Nikon D60, D80.

ARGH!

What's the best way to go for about £600?

Re: Thoughts on D80

Know how you feel I am in the same situation, though before it came out I might go for the D90 but now I am not so sure, so I am back to searching and reading and trying to find what I want and what lens are available. My problem is half the time I do not understand what I am reading.

That is no help to you I know but you are not alone in your quandary.

Re: Thoughts on D80

Generally any lens that is not f2.8 or f4 are consumer lenses, that goes for any make. they are still very good lenses but not pro.lens.
As regards to which camera whatever make i would recommend seeing which you feel more comfortable with and which you find easier to use. So go into a camera shop and try out a couple not forgetting how easy they are to get into and use of their features.

Ii wouldn't have one thats got less than 10 meg/pix which is the norm but there are still some at 6 meg/pix also if they have a dust removal feature that would be preferable.

One other thing when buying a DSLR check out the cost of extras ie brand lens-flash etc there is quite a difference for the same lens by different makes.

What you are bound to discover is that as soon as you have bought the camera you will either see the same advertised cheaper or one that is a little more expensive but with a host of more features. So take into consideration of what you want to take photos of, some features on one make may well be better suited to your preference than another.

If this link works it should give you a side by side comparison for the cameras you've mentioned.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/comp...s450d&show=all

The Nikon D80 is a fine camera - I nearly got one. Can't really comment on the Sony. Of the Canons you've mentioned I'd certainly recommend the 40D.

One thing worth mentioning is the 40D is a bigger heavier camera than the others so go and have a play.

What will you be using the camera for ? - the 40D at (6.5 frames per second) is twice as fast as the others so worth considering if you're shooting 'action' shots.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2
1D2 & 40D

Re: Thoughts on D80

The D80 is at a good price these days!!

If you can hang on a bit and want the latest kit, the D90 might be worth holding out for. It's not released yet, so the price is close to RRP, I found it for £699 body or £849 kit. I would expect these to drop by around £100 tho.

Back to the D80, cheapest I could find is:

D80: £449
18-55: £64
55-200: £130
=£643

Was the £600 you said for brand new kit? If so it sounds reasonable

You can also get the D80 and 18-70, or D80 and 18-135 for just under £600 too - so depends on what lens you want really.

Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR

Will you use the live view ?

I thought I would but apart from playing with it when I got the camera - I've never bothered with it.

Re: Thoughts on D80

i have the D80 18 - 135mm and loving it so much,
check out my threads and my flickr gallery

cant speak for canon but they have great reveiws.

i was also tossing between a canon (cant remember what make) and a nikon D80 .

at first i wanted a canon for it fullframe but i pick a nikon only because it was much lighter and very happy with my choice

as for the live veiw...... nah no need coz i pay more attention to the subject through the eye veiw .
