How do I get back deleted pictures?

I tried to free up some space on my laptop, as I have thousands of pictures on here, so thought I would transfer them all onto disc's, going well at first, did one file at a time, checked that they were actually on there and not just a short cut, did this by loading the disc on another computer, fab! then deleted them from my laptop, got to near the end of the disc space then, wham! the driver started making a funny noise, and I got an error message saying something like " the file to this picture is missing..." eventually the "noise" stopped, I took out the disc, put it in the other computer and yes, you've guessed, all the pictures are gone!!!! DEVASTATED!!! Thankfully I never managed to lose them all, but a good few hundred! Tried everything to read the disc, but nothing! Wont be doing that again!

Re: How do I get back deleted pictures?

May I highly suggest storing your collection online at any number of sites such as Snapfish or Smugmug. I use Smugmug, which cost me about $50 a year. The advantage of Smugmug is that there's no limit to the number or size of the files stored. They are backed up by Smugmug at 3 different locations. http://bobmielke.smugmug.com

Back up all my files to Carbonite, never had to try to retrieve but at least I do not have to remember to do the backup it does it automatically every time I switch on.

Re: How do I get back deleted pictures?

Oh dear!

It sounds like it needed the files to 'finish off' the burn. Are they in the recyle bin at all?

There are programs you can get that can sometimes get back deleted data.

You might want to try one of these: http://www.tucows.com/search.html?se...ware;type:soft

Look out for the ones marked as 'freeware' if you want a free one

Re: How do I get back deleted pictures?

Peps

Bit late now but really everytime you transfer picture files or any files for that matter you should really back them up on disc.

You might be able to get them back if you get a computer expert to examine the hard drive, they usually can get deeper into it than you or I. That would be my move anyway.

I know this for a fact because I had a disaster when the hard drive developed a critical error and my expert delved into mine. The hard drive (maxtor) was at fault according to the error log he got, but even so he managed to retrieve my boarding kennel files (4000 clients +pet/contact/phone numbers/dogs age/vaccinated dates etc etc). Did I panic NO it was 20 times worse than panic, ALL my business data went. He managed to retrieve that program even though the disk was completely nackered and had to be returned to Maxtor.

Just as a matter of interest irrespective of any warrantee on the computer, what retailers DON'T tell you is most hard drives have a THREE year warrantee, mine went back to Maxtor even though it was over two years old and they replaced it with a hard drive 50 gig more than the one I sent. Ok the expert I use gave the crashed error code and no doubt Maxtor checked it out but they replaced it free of charge except for p/p.

So now I back up on my second computer second hard drive and memory stick, it was a scary lesson to learn, but learn it I did.
