Which camera?

I have a Kodak V1003 compact camera but have been pining for a Digital SLR for ages.

My OH has giving me the money as he like me doesnt know much about cameras.

I want one of those ones that take great pics of the dogs in action shots.

I have a Canon EOS 400D and Nikon 60D in mind, does anyone have any advice on camera, price and where to buy from.

I have £500 to spend

Re: Which camera?

I donlt really know enough about it....but I recently made the jump to a DSLR and went for the Sony a350....I love it, I am finding it very easy to work around and have got some shots I am really pleased with. I got a 2nd hand Minolta lens (70-210mm) for it off ebay and probably spent almost as much as you are looking to.

I think most people on here will suggest the Canon or the Nikon ......I would go into the shops and have a play with the display models...see which one you like the feel of....then look around the net for a bargin

Good luck....if you are like me the more you look into it the more confusing it gets! (maybe thats just me!)

Re: Which camera?

I'm a Pentax person and happy enough but think it is a lot to do with what falls comfortably into your hand and if the viewfinder is able to be adjusted to suit your sight. Otherwise think they will all take action shots given the correct lens. Suggest you visit a couple of camera shops and handle a few, see what is comfortable, bests to wear ear plugs if you choose one of the chain store type shops, most the assistance don’t assist and will confuse you with chatter.

Re: Which camera?

I'm confused about lens too so not able to help, seems each camera manufacturer have their own ideas and never the twain, so to speak. I'm looking for a 100mm lens with an aperture of 1.8 and I can't find one anywhere that will suit my camera. TBH I can’t find one full stop.

Have found a 100mm 2.8 and think I may go for that but I am not sure, oh! Decisions, decisions.

Re: Which camera?

Snapper, I think you will struggle to get a 100mm f1.8 for your Nikon. The only one I am aware of is a manual focus lens 105mm.

There is the 105mm f/2D AF DC-NIKKOR which has a defocus control for portrait use but I don't know of any Nikkor f1.8's.

Don't know about the independents mind.

Re: Which camera?

You are right and you are wrong, right in that I can't find anything wider than a 2.8 and wrong that I have a Pentax, just makes thing even more of a problem although they do do a 100mm 2.8 tis a tax costly.

Still dithering about the focal length and wonder if I may find a 70mm or even a 50mm more managable.

They are both great cameras Out of the two the Nikon D60 is a newer model.

I would start off by going into a camera shop and handling them personally - if any of them jump out at you get that one

If not, then I would see whether you are happy with the pictures taken with the 'kit lens' (if you are getting them with the kit). I LOVE the kit lens that comes with the Nikons, it really is exceptional value, and you'll find the next lens you get is a complimentary lens, rather than a replacement.

Check out pics taken with the kit lens on pbase.com and see which ones you prefer.

Most of it is down to how you like the cameras in person - go check them out and tell us what you think
