Iv got the Tamron 70- 300mm its what i did for the kids Sports day. TBH its not really a good lens. Its slow, noisy and suffers from a fair bit of CA. The 55-200 would be a better option.

Re: New lens time! Nikon 55-200vr or Tamron af 70-300 or lensbaby

With any third party lens you would have to specify the mount ( camera) it would be used on. Again some third party lenses are up with the camera manufactures own make and others fall well behind. To generalise would be impossible and the only way to decide is to match like for like. Tamron for example have been highly praised in magazines for their 90mm macro lens yet their 70-200mm f2.8 has been highly critised due to the slowness of the motor drive.

General rule of thumb is to stick with the camera manufactures own make unless other factors come into the equation such as price etc.
Nikon 70-300mm lens non VR can still be bought on e-bay for around the £75 mark, Phil had my one as I upgraded to 70-300VR version. The original 70-300 is still a very good lens and well worth considering.

Don't forget the 300mm lens has a lot longer reach than 200mm, handy for those long distance shots

Just one example of the lens on offer on e-bay

taken with that lens @ 200mm with nikon D70s
