My pets' eyes!

They're doing my nut in!

Even when I use redeye reduction (which is what it says to use to ensure 'eyes appear natural') they are still white in the middle...

I've tried not using a flash but then they either blur or seem under exposed on occasion.

It's bugging me because I get some really nice shots if it wasn't for the 'evil eyes' that all my pets end up having in photos!

Any tips?

Re: My pets' eyes!

Unless someone corrects me - and I really hope they do - there's no simple solution to this, other than to go out of your way to avoid flash, or use indirect flash (not always an option with P&S cameras)

It seems to me that both cameras and software expect to be dealing with the red eye effect generated by human eyes, not those of pets, and there clearly is a big difference. Some pictures of my pup taken with flash suffer from "blue eye" rather than red eye!

The only solution I've come up involves a very tedious post-processing session, where I recolor the affected areas or even clone small sections from untainted photos.

Re: My pets' eyes!

Thanks Beanie's Dad..

Yeah, Eddy's eyes come out blue or really white! I have discovered though, it's usually his and not Takara's so I think it's down to his eyes deteriorating through old age. The vet mentioned glaucoma recently

Thanks

Re: My pets' eyes!

Yeah the best bet is to avoid flash, or use an editing suite to correct red-eye. Some cameras even have this built in, so you can apply it after you've take the shot

Re: My pets' eyes!

Don't think that most editing suites will deal with green eye, mine will not, you can correct yourself with out too much difficulty, I select the pupil and using a brush and the colour the eye should be, set the colour opacity low to start with, when you get the effect you want, replace the highlights and the green eye has gone.

When I started reading this I wondered whether it was a problem with the dogs eyes themselves and not the camera, you have answered the question.

You know many people have realised a pet has eye problems from this sort of thing happening with photo's all the time. I think that you have found out what the reason is.

Re: My pets' eyes!

I did not read your post properly did I, sorry I assumed it was the effect of the flash that was the problem, however a cataract would show up blue or white, if it is an old dog this is very common if a youngster the vet should send you to a specialists to have a look.

Re: My pets' eyes!

Thanks all,

Eddy's eyes have been like it since I got him (he was 11 and a half when I got him) and the vet wasn't concerned...

Takara's eyes do react to flash and the CATS! MY LORD! The cats eyes are a nightmare and they move too sodding fast to not use a flash I will practice though, I promise

Re: My pets' eyes!

Again this is one of the drawbacks with compact cameras you can't alter the direction of flash. With a DSLR and flashgun you can "bounce" the flash off a surface, ie wall/ceiling, and avoid redeye better as well as shadows behind the subject. As others have mentioned using a good editing suite and a lot of work can over come most problems but its easier to be able to take the picture as is.

Re: My pets' eyes!

May I suggest a free, simple solution to your problem. Go to www.download.com and look for RedEye 1.8. This software is so easy to use & does a great job of instantly coloring the red eye in photos. Works for me.

Also, try this link for a tutorial on how to do it.
